Diet
for children
Children
are believed to be more prone to kapha dosha during childhood, making them
that much more vulnerable to mucus-related respiratory illnesses such as,
asthma, bronchitis, colds, coughs, ear infections and pneumonia. This is why
children should generally be given a kapha reducing diet. Hot milk is always
good for children, but since it is hard to digest, it is best served
alone—or at the most with ghee (clarified butter) and sugar/honey, or boiled
with basil leaves and cinnamon. Yogurt is a more easily digestible food
product, and when it is mixed with cardamom or cumin, it helps digest meals.
It is best to give children yogurt diluted with water (one part yogurt to one
part water) for best results.
To
aid the higher metabolic rates of growing children, it is best to give them
food rich in fibers, protein and calcium, rather than those containing extra
amounts of carbohydrates and saturated fats. The need for a healthier diet and
lifestyle cannot be emphasized enough in these times of childhood obesity and
high cholesterol levels. A total cut down on junk foods and fast foods,
together with some forms of daily outdoor exercise is absolutely necessary for
children.
In
such a scenario, freshly cooked, warm and nourishing, homemade meals are best
for children. A fiber, protein and calcium-rich diet is recommended. Lots of
whole grain cereals, fresh, green vegetables such as spinach, lettuce,
broccoli and brussel sprouts are beneficial. Mineral, vitamin and calcium-rich
fruits, fruit and vegetable juices, warm vegetable soups, and protein-rich
beans and legumes provide nourishment and nutrition.
Instill
a habit of feeding your child at least two hours before bedtime. A glass of
hot or warm milk before bedtime is also very beneficial for children.
