Masa/Masik Shivaratri dates 2024
Every month the 14th lunar phase during the dark half, i.e., Krishna Paksha is known as Masa Shivaratri or Masik Sivaratri.
Masa Shivaratri in the month of Magha is known as Maha Shivaratri as per the Amavasyant panchanga followers. According to Purnimant panchanga it is in the month of Phalguna. However both Schools, celebrate all Shivaratris including Maha Shivaratri on same day.
According to Hindu Mythology, on the midnight of Maha Shivaratri, Lord Shiva saved the world by swallowing the poisonous fumes called Halahal, which came out when the gods and demons churned the ocean (samudra manthan). Hence people worship and pay homage to Lord Shiva on this day. The Masa Shivaratri Pooja time is at Nishita Kaal – the 8th Muhurta of night time and is for two Ghatis – (24 hours = 60 Ghatis) usually midnight time. Observing fast on Shivaratri days is very common in India.
Apart from being a very good day for Siva worship, it is also a great day to recite the Lalita Sahasranama of Devi as advised by Lord Hayagreeva.
