Ayodhya is the legendary birth place of Lord Rama, the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is on the banks of river Saryu in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the The Sapta Moksha puris or seven holy places to visit for Moksha or liberation.
It is believed that at the birth place of Lord Rama there was an ancient temple, which was demolished by the Mughal emperor Babur in 1528–29 and a Babri mosque erected in its place. In 1992, Hindu activist mobs demolished the Babri mosque and wanted to replace it with a temple of Rama. It caused some communal disharmony and a long legal battle was fought by the Hindu groups and the opposing Muslim groups.
In 2003 an archaeological excavation by the Archaeological Survey of India led by archaeologist KK Muhammad found evidence indicating that Hindu temple remains had existed on the site and this gave a lot of credence to the disputed site case..
