The
following is the glossary of the astrological terms used in the Indian Vedic
astrology. Please note that in the Sanskrit language several of these words
have other meanings but here only the relevant astrological meaning is given.
Abhijit: An "extra", 28th Nakshatra which is taken in to
consideration in the olden days.
Ahargana: Days since creation
AK: Abbreviation for Atma karaka
Amatyakaraka: The planet with the second highest degree in the birth chart.
AmK: Abbreviation for Amatya karaka
Amshas: Divisional charts such as Navamsha and Saptamsha
Anuradha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Ardra: One of the 27 nakshatras
Argala: Obstruction
Ari: 6th house
Ashlesha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Ashtakavarga: A system of determining the effects of planets in transit, and
the strength of houses in the birth chart
Ashwini: One of the 27 nakshatras
Atma Karaka: The planet with the highest degree in the birth chart
Avastha: "State" there are several kinds of states that planets can
be in. The Avasthas: Conditions of the planets calculated based on different
criteria and give a more precise understanding of how the planet in question
behaves in the chart.
Ayana Bala: A source of strength due to the planet's declination. Each
planet is strongest either North or South of the equator. Ayana Bala in one of
the components of Kala Bala.
Ayanamsha: The difference between the Tropical and sidereal zodiac in
degrees.
Bala: Strength
Balava: One of the Karanas (half-lunar days)
Bhandu: 4th house
Bharani: One of the 27 nakshatras
Bhava: House
Bhava chart: A chart cast using unequal houses. (this chart is different from
the Bhava Lagna chart)
Bhava Karaka: The "house significator"; the planet that represents
or signifies a house
Bhava Lagna: One of three special ascendants, mathematically derived from the
time from sunrise to birth. This chart is different from the Bhava chart,
which used the regular ascendant.
Bhava Madya: The midpoint of a house
Bhava Sandhi: Junction of two houses
Bhavat bhavam: The house which is as far from the house concerned, as the
concerned house is from the ascendant; for example the 4th from the 4th (7th
house), or the 9th from the 9th (5th house)
Bhayat: The expired portion of the Nakshatra; the part that is already past
through. This is used for calculating the dasha balance at birth
Bindu: A benefic dot, used in ashtakavarga
Binnashtakavarga: The individual bindus (points) that a planet gains in the 12
signs.
BK: Abbreviation for Bhratru karaka
Brahma: A special qualification for that planet that meets the Brahma
requirements. Brahma is used to determine the first dasha in the Sthira dasha
system.
Buddh (Bu): Mercury
Chakra: Chart
Chandr (Ch): Moon
Chapa (Cp): One of the Upa Grahas
Chara dasha: A sign based dasha system where the length of each dasha period
is variable, dependant on the particular location of the planets in one's
chart. (Chara means movable or changeable)
Chara Rashi: Movable sign: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn
Chesta bala: Motional strength, one of the components of Shad Bala.
Chitra: One of the 27 nakshatras
Dara karaka: The karaka (significator) for wife
Dhan: 2nd house
Dhanistha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Dhanu: Sagittarius
Dharm: 9th house
Dhuma (Dh): One of the Upa Grahas
Dig bala: Directional strength, one of the components of Shad Bala. Dig
Bala represents the strength based on the direction occupied in the birth
chart. For example Mercury is strongest in the Eastern direction, represented
by the Ascendant
DK: Abbreviaton for Dara karaka
Drekkana Bala: A source of strength based on the gender of the planet, and the
drekkana it occupies. Male, hemaphrodite and female planets acquire strength
in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd portion of 10 degrees (drekkana) of the signs.Drekkana
Bala is one of the components of Stana Bala.
Drik bala: Aspectual strength, one of the components of Shad Bala.
Drishti: Aspect
Dusthana houses: The 6th, 8th and 12th houses.
Dwiswabhava Rashi: Dual signs, Gemini, Virgo, Saggitarius and Pisces
Ghatika Lagna: One of three special ascendants, mathematically derived from
the time from Sunrise to birth
Ghatis: A unit of time 1 Ghati=24 minutes
GK: Abbreviation for Gnati Karaka
Gochara kundali: Transit chart
Grahas: "Planets", of course the Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu are
technically not planets
Guru (Gu): Jupiter
Hasta: One of the 27 nakshatras
Hora: One hour.
Hora Lagna: One of three special ascendants, mathematically
derived from the time from sunrise to birth
Jyeshtha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Kala Bala: Strength from time related causes. The Kala Bala is the sum of 9
kinds of strength, all related to time. Kala Bala is one of the components of
Shad Bala.
Kaksha (Kak): A kaksha is 1/8th of a sign. It is used in Ashtakavarga.
Kanya: Virgo
Karakamsha: The sign occupied by the Atma karaka
Karka: Cancer
Karma: 10th house
Kendra Bala: A source of strength based on the house the planet occupies.
Planets are strongest in kendras (houses 1,4,7 and 10), weaker in Panaparas
(2,5,8 and 11) and weakest in Apoklimas (3,6,9 and 12). Kendra Bala is one of
the components of Stana Bala.
Ketu (Ke): Southern lunar node
Kumbha: Aquarius
Krittika: One of the 27 nakshatras
Kundali: Chart
Labha: 11th house
Magha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Makara: Capricorn
Mangal (Ma): Mars
Meena: Pisces
Mesha: Aries
Migrasira: One of the 27 nakshatras
Mithuna: Gemini
Moola: One of the 27 nakshatras
Muhurta kundali: A chart used to find an auspicious timing of an event
Naisargika bala: Natural strength, one of the components of Shad Bala.
Nathonnatha Bala: A source of strength from birth taking place at day or
night. Certain planets are strong at midnight, others are strong at noon.
Nathonnatha Bala: It is one of the components of Kala Bala.
Oocha Bala: A source of strength based on the degree of exaltation. The closer
a planet is to the point of full exaltation, the stronger. Oocha Bala is one
of the components of Sthana Bala.
Ojhayugmar Bala: A source of strength based on the planet's occupancy of
odd/even signs. Certain planets get stronger if they are placed in an odd
sign, others are stronger in even signs. This applies both on the birth chart
and the navamsha.
Ojhayugmar Bala: It is one of the components of Sthana Bala.
Paksha Bala: A source of strength derived from the Moon phase. Benefic planets
gain strength with a waxing Moon, and Malefics gain strength with a waning
Moon.
Paksha Bala: It is one of the components of Kala Bala.
Parivata (Pa): One of the Upa Grahas
Prashna kundali: The chart of the present time and local place, used for
answering questions. "Prashna" means question
Punarvasu: One of the 27 nakshatras. It is the birth star of Lord Rama.
Purva Asadha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Purva Bhadrapada: One of the 27 nakshatra
Purva Phalguni: One of the 27 nakshatras
Putrasthana: 5th house
Rahu (Ra): Northern lunar node
Randhr: 8th house
Rashis: Signs
Revati: One of the 27 nakshatras
Rohini: One of the 27 nakshatras. It is the birth star of Lord Krishna.
Sahaj: 3rd house
Sahams: Special points in the Progression chart which signify very specific
areas of life.
Saptavargaja Bala: A source of strength based on the sign placement in vargas.
This strength represents how well the planet is placed in the 7 most important
divisional charts. Saptavargaja Bala in one of the components of Stana Bala.
Sarvashtakavarga (Also Sarv.): The total Bindus all planets receive in a any
sign.
Shad Bala: Shad means 6, and Bala means strength. Shad Bala is a 6 fold
strength that indicates how powerful or influencial a planet is.
Shani (Sa): Saturn
Shravana: One of the 27 nakshatras
Shukra (Sk): Venus
Simha: Leo
Sthana Bala: Positional strength. A source of strength based on planet's
position in the zodiac. It is composed of 5 sub-divisions. Stana Bala is one
of the components of Shad Bala.
Sthira dasha: A sign based dasha system that starts with the sign occupied by
Brahma.
Surya (Sy): The Sun
Swati: One of the 27 nakshatras
Tanu: 1st house
Thribhaga Bala: A source of strength caused by the birth taking place in one
of the 3 portions of day and night. Any planet may get this strength only if
birth took place in its particular portion of the day or night. Thribhaga Bala
is one of the components of Kala Bala.
Tula: Libra
Upagrahas: "Sub Planets" these are grahas (planets) derived from
mathematical calculations
Upaketu (Uk): One of the Upa Grahas
Uttara Phalguni: One of the 27 nakshatras
Uttara Asadha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Uttara Bhadrapad: One of the 27 nakshatras
Vargas: Divisional charts such as Navamsha and Saptamsha
Vargottama: Being placed in the same sign in the Birth chart as in the
Navamsha chart
Varshaphala: Annual horoscopy
Varshphal kundali: Progression chart used in annual horoscopy
Vighatis: A unit of time 60 Vighatis=1 Ghati, 1 Ghati=24 minutes
Vishakha: One of the 27 nakshatras
Vimsopaka Bala: Vimsopaka Bala is the strength of a planet based on its
dignity in the divisional charts. There are different groups of divisional
charts that are used for calculating the Vimsopaka Bala.
Vrischika: Scorpio
Vrishabha: Taurus
Vyatipa (Vy): One of the Upagrahas
Vyaya: 12th house
Yogini Dasha: A nakshatra based dasha system
Yuddha Bala: A source of strength applied on planets that are in
"war", i.e. a planet may get this when placed within one degree of
longitude from another planet. Yuddha Bala is one of the components of Kala
Bala.
Yuvati: Indicates the 7th house
Yuti: The Sanskrit word Yuti means conjunction
